BCarbon Showcases Carbon Market Expertise at Rice University SSPEED Center Conference

‍ ‍ BCarbon’s CEO, Eric Unverzagt, presents on the Role of Houston-based Carbon Credit Registry at the Rice University SSPEED Center Conference in November 2025

BCarbon participated in the Rice University SSPEED Center’s 12th annual conference in November 2025, “Flood Protection Strategies: Infrastructure Solutions for Resilient Communities.” The event provided a platform for experts across academia, consulting, and industry to share insights on infrastructure, resilience, and the emerging voluntary carbon market. Day 2 of the conference specifically explored how the voluntary carbon market ecosystem functions, highlighting the interdisciplinary work underway in Houston and beyond.

Over the two days, more than 15 experts presented on the latest research, challenges, and innovations shaping the future of carbon markets. BCarbon’s team contributed key perspectives, with Eric Unverzagt discussing the value of a Houston-based carbon registry and BCarbon’s approach to building science-backed, high-integrity market infrastructure. Other staff presentations included a broad look at market dynamics, integration with soil carbon projects, and the role of voluntary carbon initiatives in advancing measurable climate outcomes.

BCarbon partners Adam Usadi and Marcela Ronquillo Hinojosa also presented. Usadi shared his company’s perspective through the BCarbon/ExxonMobil soil carbon research project, while Ronquillo Hinojosa highlighted opportunities emerging from the Tamaulipan/Mexico Carbon Credit Project. Additional highlights included presentations by Jim Blackburn on the current state of carbon markets, Christopher Ordoñez on the role of universities in fostering credible infrastructure, Lalise Mason connecting coastal blue carbon to endangered species protection, and Guido Bertola on methane emissions elimination through well plugging.

The conference underscored the importance of collaboration across sectors as the voluntary carbon market continues to evolve. BCarbon is grateful to the Rice University SSPEED Center and its partners for convening such a forward-looking and comprehensive discussion and looks forward to contributing to next year’s event.
